Author of the day: Jack London!

July 25, 2009

Today in 1897, at the age of 21, young Jack London headed off to the Klondike to join the gold rush where instead he went on to debut his writing career, producing such celebrated titles as Call of the Wild and White Fang. The former tells the compelling story of  a previously tamed wolf’s journey towards returning to his wild instincts in the Yukon (Canada) where London had relocated during the Gold Rush. Both of these became some of the best-read books for decades after publication, and both enjoyed a number of television series and film adaptations. Although the protagonist in both is a wolf and is thus considered suitable for younger readers as well, it is interesting to note that London’s primary influences were much more serious.
